Srila Acharyadeva serving Srila Prabhupada
Hridayananda das Goswami (Dr. Howard J. Resnick, Ph.D.) is one of the most respected spiritual leaders of modern times, and has accepted the task of translating the Vedic scriptures of millennial India to modern languages as his life and soul.
Srila Acharyadeva appeared in this world on November 5, 1948, in Los Angeles, California. He secured a full scholarship for the University of California, and a PhD in Harvard. On 1970, he was initiated by Srila Prabhupada.
Srila Acharyadeva distinguished himself for his eloquence, devotion, and dedication to studying the writings of his spiritual master, through which he acquired a profound knowledge of Sanskrit.
In 1972, he accepted the renounced order of life, sannyasa to spread the Krishna Conscious movement all over the world. He travels widely, giving lectures and conferences in colleges and universities all over the world.
In 1974, He was named a member of the Governing Body Commission and given the responsibility of overseeing the Krishna Consciousness Movement in Latin America. In the following years, he established many centers and attracted thousands of Latin Americans to Krishna consciousness. In his trips he preaches in fluent Portuguese, Italian, German, French and Spanish. He is also the founder of the Portuguese and Spanish BBT, which have already distributed over twenty-five million books.
Before departing from this world Srila Prabhupada asked Srila Acharyadeva, as well as ten other prominent disciples, to accept the role of spiritual master and initiate disciples to give continuity to the disciplic succession. One of the biggest challenge in his career as spiritual leader came when the leaders of ISKCON, recognizing his profound devocional erudition, entrusted him to complete Srila Prabhupada’s monumental translation and commentary of the Srimad Bhagavatam, the most important classic of Vedic literature. For thousands of years in India, great spiritual masters presented commentaries on the Bhagavatam to explain its urgent message to the people of their times. Srila Acharyadeva is the first westerner to be entrusted with this laborious task, and his success in communicating the essence of India’s spiritual heritage to modern readers has already been noticed by scholars and religious leaders in the whole world.
The Srimad Bhagavatam is the most important of the Puranas, and it covers all major fields of Vedic civilization, which flourished in India more than 50 centuries ago. With the entire society strongly based on spiritual values, Vedic culture influenced all other ancient civilizations in such fields as: arts, literature, astronomy, science, politics, psychology, mysticism, philosophy and religion. In the Srimad Bhagavatam we find detailed descriptions of the creation of the universe, the cycle of birth and death, the difference between material and spiritual natures, transmigration of the soul, the structure of the universe, the perfect social structure, the nature of time, the spiritual world, mystic powers, the history and origin of mankind, the future, the meaning and principal goal of life, and Krishna (God) and His principle names, forms, and pastimes.
The Srimad Bhagavatam has been translated in its entirety, which consists of 12 Cantos (18 volumes), into English by the efforts of HDG Srila Prabhupada, and, subsequently, his disciple Srila Acharyadeva, was entrusted to complete this task, which meant translating and writing commentaries on the 10 Canto part 2 through to the 12 Canto.
Having completed this important work many years ago, his literary project has since been the adaptation into a historical novel of the famous Indian epic, the Mahabharata.
Mahabharata is the ancient history of the world. Maha in Sanskrit means big and bharata refers to the great emperor Bharata, and covered the entire world approximately five thousand years ago. The entire work consists of 100 thousand verses, of which the Adi-parva and Sabha-parva sections are edited
